Prehistoric India: from Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers to Neolithic villages

India's Stone Age is known from archaeology — tools, burials, animal bones, pottery and rock art, not texts. It traces the long development from Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers using stone handaxes, cleavers and flake tools to Mesolithic microlith-using communities and Neolithic farming villages such as Mehrgarh. Settled life, pottery, domesticated plants and animals, and later copper use prepared the background for regional Chalcolithic cultures and the Early Harappan phase.
